Painting is discovery. Every time you make a mark on canvas, all sorts of possibilities open up---and all sorts of visual challenges to which you have to find solutions. When you take a brush to canvas, you never know exactly how the painting is going to come to life. My challenge is to constantly push myself and test the limits of my imagination in the hope of creating impressions that are distinctly mine. I begin on a blank canvas without a preconception of the final outcome. I allow things to develop according to my thoughts, feelings and moods and how these shift and change as my painting begins to unfold. I don't start with a colour order, but find the colours as I go. The whole business of spotting the small areas of colour in the canvas, how the edges meet, how accidents are controlled----all these things still fascinate me. The colours in my paintings are juxtaposed to support and contrast. They are chosen to evoke thoughts and emotions. I don’t fear change throughout the process. Images are often altered, destroyed, erased and even returned as I feel my way to the best way to bring a painting to life.

I was born in Manila, Philippines into a family of artists. My grandfather and father were both visual artists who helped me shaped my artistic style. I started my career in advertising as an art director and then became a TV commercial director before starting to paint professionally. My paintings are an exploration of composition, colour and texture. By bold and purposeful brush strokes are created by both purpose and spontaneity and reflect my interpretation of the world that surrounds me. After successful group and solo art shows in Manila in the early 2000s, I moved with my family to Toronto in 2005. Like all new immigrants I slowed down in my paintings to help my ever-supportive wife in rebuilding our family but I never stopped painting. In 2015, before my dad passed, I promised him I would go back to painting. Fulfilling my promise, I've joined group exhibitions in Toronto, Singapore and a solo show in Manila in 2019. Painting now is my full time job, I am currently represented by Canvas and Petroff Galleries in Toronto and Galerie Bloom in Montreal.
