The figure is diving into an imaginary landscape. It is inspired by an ancient Minoan sculpture of a bull leaper. The Minoan world, where many of our myths come from, has always fascinated me. I also love the organic and very female nature of their art. The painting is done in oil. In some parts there are thick blobs of paint, while in others there are thin layers where the paint has been moved fluidly (see detail). It is executed on MDF board. There are thin battens on the reverse so that it 'floats' when hung on a wall. Alternatively it could be framed. I wanted a sense of movement, of mystery.

I am a painter living and working in London. My work hovers between abstraction and figuration. I am interested in a sense of body, space and liquidity, a fugitive, unfixed quality. Forms float, come together and pull apart. Boundaries are broken. I want to convey things in the process of becoming and collapsing to give a sense of the instability that reflects the uncertainty of our times and the forces that impact upon us, and our bodies. I think of the canvas as a patina, pouring paint, creating layers through which forms emerge and recede. There is a sense of absence and presence, veiling and unveiling. Chance and accident are utilised. I would like to conjure a sense of universal life - 'a life' that escapes from our knowing, that is beyond judgement, ideas of identity. I am interested in art as 'experience' and would like my work to go beyond words, into the realm of something unknown, sensed but not understood.
