About The Artwork

Cape Ann—Rockport, Gloucester, Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, part of Beverly—is ripe with all kinds of inspiration for this artist. The light, the water, the rocks, the architecture, all combine to captivate me. I decided to do a large painting (40 x 42) based on a walk taken last summer with my wife Sue on our anniversary trip. On that day in August, this large home reveled in the morning sun, and proudly showed me the way the sun touched it outside and especially within. The most compelling reason reason this house demanded my attention relates directly to the lamp in the window and it's resulting shadow. There's a story present in that early morning light, a drama unfolding.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
