About The Artwork

Lilith Cycle »This exclusion of the outsider runs through the whole history of our culture. Exclusion of a fear-inducing feminine element is always present.« (Christa Wolf, from an interview to her book Medea: Stimmen) »Above all, this includes the figure of Lilith, Adam's first wife, who is virtually excluded from the biblical tradition as she was not only equal to Adam, but superior, yet she played an important role in the ancient Sumerian and Jewish traditions.« (Quoted from Andreas Weber, Fairy Spot: Medea—A Look Back to the Front! , Laudation) This cycle, consisting of twelve large-scale portraits of women, is a study of female nature, strongly inspired by the mythical figure of Lilith. In contrast to the much better-known figure of Eve, Lilith is often associated with qualities that, as Christa Wolf aptly put it, can be quite frightening. While Eve exemplifies the bright, worldly aspects of the feminine, Lilith symbolizes its dark, otherworldly side. Hence, under the sign of Lilith, woman becomes a troublemaker, a pursuer of her sexual instincts, wicked, perhaps even a witch or demon—and yet simultaneously the ever-alluring one!
