ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I walk in the city every day. This is one of the shops I pass en route to the gallery. There are many of these shops selling African Art and craft along my way. And this shop is my favourite. My father was a shopfitter, he had his own business and I was raised on the workshop floor. The best part of shopfitting was and remains 'Display'. What is a window display if not an installation? And the reason I love painting and installation to this day. I have painted many shopfront windows, as subject matter. I have also used many shopfront windows as exhibition spaces for art, like paintings. What attracts me to this specific display window was how jam-packed it was, and when I go inside it does not disappoint, inside it is like a treasure trove. I studied African Art History many years ago, and know authentic pieces which are merely manufactured for the tourist market, there is a difference. But in this shop, the old, the new, the highly prized and the cheaper touristy stuff all mingle to form this cacophony of shapes and sounds and smells.

I am a South African artist living and working in Cape Town. I was born and raised in Johannesburg, I attended a high school that specialised in the arts, after which I attended WITS university, doing a BA Fine Arts Degree and a postgraduate Higher Diploma in Education. Five years after my tertiary education I was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in the 2 year program at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam where I was advised by an international array of advisors for example Luc Teymans, Matt Mullican, Lisa Milroy and Dan Graham amongst others. I have exhibited locally and internationally alongside luminaries like Louise Bourgeois, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Berlinde de Bruyckere and others. I have been painting and drawing ever since I can remember. My subjects vary, I have a fascination with the transient and the poetic potential of any subject I portray. This in combination with the title becomes the field within which I allow myself the freedom to make something that communicates on some personal or emotional level with the viewer and the world around me. Often my subjects are connected to memory, both personal and collective memory.
