About The Artwork

200 x 160 cm oil on canvas Gorkem Dikel Istanbul / Turkey 2010 This was the masterpiece of my first solo show entitled “Bigger Than You” in one of the prestigious galleries of Istanbul, Soda. This show and the painting itself was inspired by a trip to North Africa, Morocco, Sahara Desert i made in 2010. In a geography in which the mountains rises like enormous sculptures of the nature and very little creature can survive, effected me in a way that that couldn’t forget. As i say in many of my interviews, during my stay in the desert, the moment i open the door of the tent, was the darkest black i have seen in my life, i scared and immediately moved back inside. Again, the moment we arrive to dessert, suddenly a wind started to blow, as the Touaregs taught us to tie our scarves to our head and face, this protected us from the sand, i saw a silverish lilly color surrounding all the sand dunes, which goes beyond three countries and yet you can not see any trace of life nor water even if you go an ocean lenght. This specific view which i called “Rock the Casbah”, inspired from the views i saw during our 10 hours van trip on the divine Atlas Mountains. There i saw villages which i assume it was impossible to get out to anywhere, in the dephts of the valleys or near peaks. Yet there vere tiny house cumulations like mushrooms as you can see in the painting. In spite of the impossibility to reach anywhere for this Sahara people, it was very common to find Coca Cola in their primitive shops in a surprising way. I utilized in this painting from a lyric painting language, inspired by impressionist painters, all the drops, faded hills view helped to increase the dramaticity of the scenery. As “Casbah” is “town” in arabic, i call this after Rachid Taha with all its energy: “Rock the Casbah”!
