Acrylic and marker on 200 G/m2 gsm Favini paper. Featured on 'Pop Culture In Pictures' A major art promoting platform on Instagram with almost half a million followers. This painting proved popular receiving over 11,000 likes in a 24hr period. In the summer of 2017 I began a series of paintings which explored kissing couples and lovers. I continue to explore these same topics to this day. Many of the artists who inspire me have done the same at some point in time. This particular painting is loosely based on an image I found via a google search, which I believe was a film still from a vintage adult movie. I rotated the image and cropped it in my usual manner, reproduced the edited version, then got to work applying the shrouding gestures. The couple appear to be standing, yet for a subtle change in mood the painting can be rotated ninety degrees clockwise. The couple for me seem to be embroiled in a desperate fight. Fused together at the face down to the hip, echoing Edvard Munch’s symbolistic motif in his painting ‘Kiss by the window’ 1892. The fusing of the faces in Munch’s painting was said to symbolize the couple’s unity. Although similar interpretations could be drawn from my painting, the real subjects in my piece were likely not a couple at all. Their unity was brief, superficial, business as usual, caught on film and dare I say contemporary with a polite handshake before parting ways. For a subtle change of narrative this piece can be rotated 90° clockwise and displayed in a landscape format. As with many of my works on paper this painting has a worn appearance in areas due to being heavily worked and washed. Please refer to detail images for a closer look. Unframed. Initialled and dated on the front. Signed, titled, dated and stamped on the reverse.

Milan-based British artist Denholm Berry approaches portraiture with an innovative and unconventional methodology. Blending psychological spaces with expressive physicality, the figures presented in the works are at once anonymous and inviting – emotions and identities are open to the viewer’s interpretation. “My hope is that, by filtering concepts in this unusual way, my obscurations will become paradoxically revealing.” Denholm’s unique artworks have been featured in many Saatchi Art collections and are held in private collections worldwide.
