About The Artwork

This painting was professionally framed for a show at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California. The theme of the show was luck and so I drew on a popular saying in my native country of South Africa for inspiration for my contribution to the show. When a person shares a tale of good fortune, the recipient of the news will often exclaim "oh, you lucky fish!" and I wanted to explore that phrase in a humorous manner. I drew the Pelican with a beak full of decidedly unlucky fishes and then added a jaunty yellow paper crown of the variety one might find in a Christmas cracker / popper. There are a handful of pelicans who live at my local lagoon and I love watching them swoop down, unexpectedly gracefully considering their size and extraordinary shape. This painting features a white pelican with a beak that is delicately painted in the colors of sunrise - a soft orange, blushing into pale pink as it moves nearer to the wiggling green, blue and white fish. The bright, unnatural yellow of the crown rests against a watery wash of green and blue ink in the colors of the Colorado Lagoon. It is framed in a thin black gallery style frame with lightweight plexi-glass as required by the museum, the back is completely sealed and features little bumpers to protect the wall surface and hang perfectly straight.
