About The Artwork

Dreams are a source of inspiration in my work, expressed through colors representing energies and interior spaces brought to this realm as art. Color speaks on each painting through textures and layers that reveal what I want people to see and feel, which in turn the viewer will experience as my painting. I choose acrylic paints on canvas for my work, as it is the best medium for my technique and the one which offers me the most versatility.

I am a contemporary abstract expressionist artist, and my inspiration comes from color itself. My work is an expression of an inner journey in which I explore the primal and simple language of the soul through abstract forms, their only representational role being to bring forth the true colors of our feelings and emotions at their purest. Color has the power to communicate meaning in two primary ways -natural associations and psychological symbolism. It is also a universal, unifying language. I create my art seeking a balance in my everyday life and an order within my innermost state of mind in search for truth in myself and to transform my primitive expression into a universal image, refined through many layers of the ego. That order creates itself before my eyes at the tip of my brush, without a plan or previous knowledge. I let my hand explore at random while staining the canvas without a specific idea, other than to make my vision a reality. Born in Havana, Cuba, I grew up watching my father, also an artist, paint and illustrate magazine covers, which influenced my path towards becoming a painter myself. I left Cuba with my family in 1960 and came to live in New York City, where I started to paint and exhibit my work in New York's Greenwich Village and other venues on the east coast. Ever since, I have been developing my own painting style and technique, using color as an inspiration and communicator of my thoughts and emotions. I have had many solo exhibitions and participated in group shows both in the US and abroad. My work is in several private and public collections and has sold at Sotheby's New York. At present, I live in Miami, Florida, where I have my studio.
