"I’m interested in examining the boundaries of painting and reducing it to its essentials. To organise space, color and light and make it accessible. Giving the observer a place where he/she can lose him/herself and where subjective experience and perception completes the painting. It is always more a question than an answer.“ Christoph Schrein is a Leipzig based painter that explores the sublime in painting. In his work he creates a contemplative space by a superposition of wave-shaped color streams that form a complex illusion of spatial depth. From influences of Tachism, New British Sculpture and also current trends in Generative Art, Christoph Schrein has developed an own imagery, which is to be positioned in contemporary abstract painting. His work comes into being from a reflexive-dialectical working process that consists in compressing colour, shape and spatial structures. One layer after another artistic gestures are superimposing themselves to get closer to the final image. The artwork seems to have been developing by itself and withholds the artist’s former intervention. As it asks for a dialogue without giving any answer, it examines the inner being of painting and challenges perception.

---------- Christoph Schrein is a German artist, based in Leipzig. He graduated his studies of Fine Art at the ArtEZ/ Institute of the arts/ Netherlands in 2007. The painter Christoph Schrein has developed his own distinctive abstract imagery throughout his artistic work. His monochrome paintings appear to be in flowing motion. The effect is caused by the superposition of wave-shaped, light-reflecting color streams that create a complex illusion of space and depth. The images should invite to stay and discover, induce a moment of contemplation and slowing down.
