About The Artwork

I'm sitting in the shade and looking upwards: A huge tree! Morikawa Kyoroku (1655–1715), samurai from Omi     Dr. Marjeta Ciglenečki wrote the following in the catalogue for the exposition of Rimele's watercolour paintings: Oto Rimele's watercolour paintings are a reflection of an unencumbered creative contemplation. They are created in a similar way to how a master drawing is created—they overtake thoughts, and the thoughts mature together with the strokes. This way, the author maintains contact with that which is primeval and inexpressible, and which is being formed before the mind gains awareness of it.  The painter usually finds inspiration in landscape, in accordance with the old rules of the watercolour technique, and in some cases the landscape might even be recognizable. However, Rimele's watercolour paintings are usually abstracted. Rather than in the real landscape that is offered to the eyes, Rimele is interested in the possibility of unalloyed connection with nature, while the experienced moment is extended into eternity in Rimele’s artistic expression.   ----------------- The series of watercolour paintings titled »Festive Sights« was created in the festive season in December 2015. The series of watercolour paintings titled »Mediterraneans Exteriors« was created in August 2016 in the natural reserve of Strunjan on the Mediterranean coast, and in September 2016 on the Mediterranean island of Hvar, nearby the village of Rudine.

Oto Rimele is a painter, visual artist and author of visual spatial settings. He expresses himself with pure form and colour. Currently, he is Full Professor for drawing and painting at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. In 2004 he received the Prešeren Fund Award, the highest recognition for achievements in the field of art in the Republic of Slovenia. As regards construction, his images are created is such a way as to enable radiation of colour light. The images are accurately placed into the space of the exposition area and achieve the creation of non-material colour communication: his images-objects enable the light of the space to pass into the light of the image, the silence and the inner sound of the image. Rimele strives to achieve such a state of the visual image that will establish, in the interaction with the spectator and the space, the state of wholeness: the artistic image is here in order for the spectator to be able to become aware of himself again and enter the dimension of his non-materiality. His work could be described as “sacral minimalism” and corresponds, as regards the content, to the European spiritual tradition and contemporary authors such as Anish Kapoor, James Turell, Bill Viola, Arvo Pärt. Additional information on the author and his work in English can be found at the website www.otorimele.com.
