Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

Michael Joseph Jackson (MJ) is an African-American singer and songwriter, who has a strong personality. I liked him a lot when I was a student, always dancing to his songs. But I never became a hardcore fan, like so many others did. My tastes took me towards other music genres.

When he died in mid 2009, I spent a lot of time thinking about his career. I wasn’t alone, I’m sure, in wondering what lay behind the man. Despite his success, why did he do so much to change his appearance and skin colour? If he does not like the colour of his skin, why did him invest time and effort in creating many anti-racism works? If he desired to be a white man that much, so how was that he became so close to Nelson Mandela, a man who fought tirelessly for the rights of the black people? Was changing skin colour a crazy way for man like him, with fame and fortune, to always try and upstage himself, as popularly claimed by tabloids? Suddenly I realized that it was simply his performance art. He took risks, using chemicals to change his skin tone, to send out a message that “Our skin is just an outside cover”.

With his voice, dancing and his own life, MJ broke the skin colour barrier, warming up millions of hearts and bringing people closer to each other. I’ve admired him more since his death and have decided to paint him, as a modest way of praising him. For me, MJ was a great artist.
