Richard’s paintings are derived from his unconscious mind; he does not plan them beforehand, but rather in the moment. He expresses himself through his paintings in a way that is always spontaneous and surprising. The Japanese series is influenced by his extensive travel to Japan, and by his wife, Teruko and their Japanese family. The paintings of the man and woman Noh masks are depicted as they are used in the Japanese Noh theatre, most of the other masks have been modified. The Noh theatre started in 14th century Japan. Richard uses Noh masks as a way to absorb Japanese culture into today’s modern world. Richard studied painting and drawing at Worcester art museum, Worcester, Massachusetts, and received a BFA from Pratt Institute, New York City, studying under Richard Lindner, Philip Pearlstein and Richard Bove. His work has been exhibited at AZUMA gallery and TOSAN TOSAN gallery, New York City. All the paintings are oil on canvas unless otherwise noted. The letter T. In Richard’s signature stands for his Japanese wife and inspiration, Teruko. Richard G. Secor, age 85 of Kew Gardens, New York passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022 leaving behind his wife, Teruko along with their two cats, Jimmy and Vicky.
