Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, metallic pigments, and archival pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Central to Peter Vahlefeld’s practice is his modulation of paint with a variety of mediums, including pigments like gold, copper, silver, and pigment prints, resulting in visceral, thickly impastoed surface. The painting is not an emulation of Modern masterworks, but an overpainting of a marketing campaign, advertising Jeff Koons in collaboration with Louis Vuitton in their »Masters« series for handbags. The artwork is a dialogue with the underlying ad campaign and the character of the use is for commentary. The work adds something new, transforming the printed matter with new expression, and wild painting.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Hong Kong and Hamburg (Germany). He studied fine arts at Parsons School of Design, NYC and currently lives between Berlin and Munich. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions and art fairs, including Art Fair Cologne, Art Karlsruhe (both Germany), Art Bodensee (Austria) and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Chloe Savigny (Paris), Fiona Alison (London), and 46 Parachute Purple (New York). Having a studio in Berlin, he was filmed there by the ZDF television channel for a Robert Mapplethorpe feature. His work can be found in corporate collections throughout Germany as well as in private collections worldwide.
