We Ain't Goin' Nowhere is the title of my recent solo show at Kasper Contemporary, and it refers to the series of works that I completed throughout various stages of lockdown and quarantine, punctuated by brief flashes of what I have heard described as “the new normal.” This painting was also made under those constraints. The work is influenced by Edward Hopper’s dreamy, mute Cape Cod tableaus, with a dash of the uneasiness of David Lynch thrown in, and a pinch (okay a heap-ha!) of the disorientation of Diane Arbus’ work. The setting hovers between the built world and the natural landscape, and although no people are pictured, a residue of the human presence exists in each work in the series: a building, a streetlamp, or bedraggled paint markings on the asphalt.

Edie Nadelhaft is a New York City-based artist and avid motorcyclist whose lush, visceral oil paintings and slick, technology-inspired sculpture have been exhibited at museums, art fairs and galleries throughout North America, and internationally in Taiwan, Shanghai and Basel, Switzerland. Awards & residencies include The Edward F. Albee Foundation Fellowship (summer 2024), The Artist in Residence at The Visible Vault, Yellowstone Art Museum, (Billings, MT, 2015), Platte Clove Artist-In-Residency, Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, (Platte Clove, NY, 2008), Fine Arts Painting Department Merit Award, Massachusetts College of Art, (Boston, MA, 1995) and the Combined Jewish Philanthropies Academic Scholarship, (Boston, MA, 1994). Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Ms Nadelhaft studied painting and art history at SUNY Purchase and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and received her BFA with honors (painting, 1995) from The Massachusetts College of Art & Design.
