ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This stimulating contemporary still life is full of prismatic jewel-like hues and lively brushwork. A collection of interesting objects and fruit become a mosaic like display in this distinctive, original oil painting. A wonderful sense of pattern unfolds between and around the eclectic mix of objects. Transparent glass, robust round oranges and a table covered with motifs bound within fabric create a unique visual experience. The painting has a soft and vibrant character portraying random objects in a way that delight's the eye. The palette of hues are clear and refreshing combining a delicate balance of both cool and warm variations. Emotive brushwork casts a sense of texture and movement while simple bold lines propose spaces of engagement to enjoy. This beautiful painting was inspired by my love of reflected light and the transparent nature of glass. The painting was created in my studio on a gallery wrapped canvas. The sides of the canvas are painted so that the artwork can be hung with or without a frame.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
