About The Artwork

This piece is from a mini-series titled UNCHARTED/MAPPED, depicting aerial landscapes of other planets with and without scientific charting. Mercury Mapped has cartographic information from USGS map I-1233. The adhesion of acrylic ink to polypropylene allows for the texture of the cratered surface. The polypropylene is translucent and can appear luminous if backlit.

The Other Art Fair Dallas 2021 New Futures Award Winner As much as I love Earth, I think about extraterrestrial landscapes a lot. Until we have manned missions landing on other planets (which may never be possible for gas giants like Jupiter), we won’t have human-scaled Romantic imagery of these places, and must make do with images and data from above. When I paint planets, I start with a satellite map to anchor the territory, and interpret the space with ink and other water media. Some of these regions have gone unsurveilled for years, and every passing day takes us further from its current state. What’s really out there? What does the activity of a planet without people look like? I grew up all over Texas, and lived in Annapolis, New Orleans, Chicago, and Memphis before returning to Dallas. Marnay-sur-Seine, France is where I spent a two-month residency to work on my graduate thesis. I was part of the first cohort of resident artists at The Cedars Union art incubator in Dallas, and I was a speaker at TEDxAustinCollege in September 2021.
