ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a working sketch for a larger painting with the same title. The quote "Mermaids have no tears, and so they suffer all the more" is indeed attributed to Hans Christian Andersen, known for his fairy tales that often contain deep emotional themes. The line comes from his story “The Little Mermaid,” where the mermaid, who sacrifices her voice for legs, experiences profound pain with every step she takes on land, and yet she cannot cry. Andersen’s tales frequently explore such poignant ideas, where the inability to express pain outwardly can lead to a deeper internal suffering.
