This painting is on canvas and panel and ready to hand with a 1.5" side of raw canvas, signed on right hand side and back. MESSAGING POLLINATORS, is part of a recent series of work, concerning ice melt and animals and pollinators effected by it. This series portrays a story about a Okjökull glacier in Iceland, that has recently been deemed by scientists to be "extinct". Due to this unfortunate event Icelanders along with the country's prime minister have held a farewell procession up to the summit where they commemorated it with a "letter to the future", in the form of a permanent plaque, explaining to future generations what has transpired. This series of work characterizes my observations and reaction – as an artist and as a human being – to this event and to the changing ice caps and glaciers around the globe. My multi-layered abstract canvases serve as windows into natural landscapes and environments with pollution and consumerism clinging to the edges. The pieces are made up of layers of paint, sprayed, scraped and squeegeed, to reveal large fields of color, with expressive gestural marks where abstracted elements from the natural world are exposed. My work thereby elevates the viewer’s awareness of our involvement as human beings in our world’s natural decline, from its melting ice to disappearing species, from plastic-overrun oceans to pollinators poisoned by pesticides. My abstract, gestural style of painting encourages viewers to freely discover their own meanings in the work, although the bold use of paint constantly highlights natural forms and elements.

My work portrays my observations as an artist and a human being of the deep connection between plants and animals and the ecosystems in which they thrive. Each painting draws inspiration from the idea that everything in nature is connected to everything else. I explore space and form by intertwining gestural marks and drawings with thick layers of paint and subtle transparencies, leading to the intersection of abstraction and the natural world. During the painting process, I am mapping out the underlying paint layers, collage, and drawing mediums. While some of this process is predetermined, other aspects arrive organically through subtracting and adding, carving, and peeling away paper and paint to reveal earlier parts of the work. As I manipulate paint on the canvas, the compositions begin to encompass a journey through a multitude of layers that combine unconventional methods, gradually revealing a history of spatial interpretations as the final piece emerges. The resulting multi-layered abstract canvases serve as windows into natural landscapes and environments, with pollution and consumerism hanging at the edges. My works are metaphors for survival and hope. They attempt to elevate the viewer’s awareness of our involvement as human beings in our world’s case for eco-sustainability. Fran McNamara
