About The Artwork

“It’s vital that we learn from our history and be vigilant that it is never repeated by anyone and to anyone.” Howard Chandler Howard Chandler is a holocaust survivor and holocaust educator based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The colour scheme in this work was chosen for several reasons. Firstly, I find blues, greens and soft purples to be healing colours, which I hope softens some of the pain that I imagine must be associated with repeatedly sharing such a horrific story. To me, these colours also reflect the kindness and strength that radiates from this remarkable soul known as Howard Chandler. At the same time, my use of the specific colour of blue: Prussian Blue— references the more sinister elements of his story that one can sense in the deep dark lines carved upon his face.
Prussian Blue, first discovered in 1704, became the signature tint of the Prussian army. By 1724 was a popular pigment among European painters. Traces of the Prussian Blue pigment found on the walls and ceilings of the gas chambers in the concentration camps, result from the compound ferrocyanide, a byproduct of the Zyklon B gas used to exterminate the Jews. Elements of that same gas are traditionally used in making the Prussian blue pigment. Lastly, Prussian blue, also known as potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate, is used as a medication to treat thallium poisoning or radioactive caesium poisoning. Hermes, the Messenger, is the winged herald and messenger of the Olympian gods in Greek mythology. He is also a divine trickster and the protector of travellers, flocks, merchants, thieves and orators. Hermes was the only Olympian capable of crossing the border between the living and the dead, moving quickly and freely between the worlds of the mortal and the divine, aided by his winged sandals. Hermes plays the role of the psychopomp or "soul guide"—a conductor of souls into the afterlife. Learn More: https://www.amantascott.com/howard-chandler

Through encaustic paintings, interactive sculptures, audio/video installations and workshops, I address urgent contemporary social issues. Core to my practice is connecting art with communities— inspiring people of diverse cultures, ages and walks of life to engage with art, share stories, and consider how it relates to their lives. Canadian-born, I come from over ten generations of human rights activists, philosophers, rabbis, artists and refugees. Uniting us all is the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam: each individual’s responsibility to repair the world. Encaustic painting, practiced by Greek artists since 400 B.C, evolves through successive layers of molten beeswax, each fused to the previous one with a torch or iron. An active partner in my process, beeswax asserts itself texturally and sculpturally as I paint, layer, fuse, scrape, and re-work. This medium also embodies the multiple layers of meaning in my work. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, psychology and mythology, particularly stories of archetypal females, I honour women’s strength and wisdom in the face of adversity. My work celebrates visionary contemporary women of all ages, orientations, cultures and walks of life making a difference in our world today. Each painting’s title and story parallels a legendary heroine with a contemporary woman. By fusing the past with the present, I invite viewers to look at women in a new light, as a means to illuminate and address urgent contemporary social issues. I paint faces, recognizable yet abstracted, closeup so the viewer can look into their eyes without distractions and feel what remarkable people they are. In this way, I challenge traditional representations of women in art which normalize objectification and violence against women. Through dialogue, reflection and the power of art, I aim to inspire, provoke change, dismantle harmful narratives, and contribute to a more equitable society.
