Milk and Honey is part of Rachel Herd's series exploring purity culture and sexuality in a Christian context. Rachel Herd is an artist based in Scotland and currently studies at Duncan of Jordanstone Collage of Art and Design. She primarily focuses on oil painting and waterless lithography. Regardless of the project, her Christian faith continuously informs her artistic practice. Herd’s recent work has been an internal reflection of the religious culture she was raised in. She uses her artistic practice as a method of processing her past and current beliefs and personal challenges encountered in life. While continuing in the Christian faith, Herd is investigating the topics of nudity, love and sexuality. Playing with scale within oil painting, Herd’s focus on this project has been depictions of the body and its connection with other bodies within romantic relationships. This particular project is an exploration of her beliefs and experiences with purity culture which is reflected in her subject matter and censorship of the body in her compositions.
