James Jolly uses visceral colour, relief and expressive mark making in his Oil paintings. The series mindscapes was inspired by the writings of Henry David Thoreau ‘A Lake is the landscapes most beautiful and expressive feature, it is the earth's eye looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.’ Jolly proposes that the relationships between the eye, the mind and landscapes are intrinsically linked. We are often neglectful of the spaces we inhabit, to our detriment. This causes our landscapes to dictate our minds, beauty is all around us if we just take the time to observe. Jolly creates mindscapes to pose the question of whether you can be more critical about the environments you Inhabit?
