I live and paint in Edinburgh, Scotland, and also Fife, Scotland. The great thing about having original paintings in the home is that you get to live with them, to see them in different light, or in different moods. To find oneself looking at them by chance, or deliberately. It is very different than seeing them on line or in a gallery or a publication or reproduction. I was born in London, but when I was 18 years old I moved to Edinburgh and attended the Edinburgh College Of Art for 4 years in the Drawing and Painting School, finishing up with a post-graduate year there. I have remained in Edinburgh ever since and have made it my home. My mother, Mary Kent Harrison, RBA, NEAC was a successful painter and the family home was often redolent with the scent of artists oil paint. I often gain much strength by studying her work. I find inspiration for my paintings by going about my everyday life keeping my eyes open for places or situations that I find inspiring as source material for painting compositions. I always feel better if I paint each day. I find it very positive and makes me feel good. At the moment I am interested in developing my range of colours and am using some more subtle greys. I take a lot of time to choose the subject matter for my paintings. Regarding landscapes, this process is helped by getting to know a particular part of the country very well, and over a period of time. I try to choose views that capture the essence of the place, and thus I can express best how I see it and what I see in it, and what I want to say about it. I think about aspects of symbolism when I paint landscape. I like it best when I feel I am embarking on something new,, and I do not like to repeat myself, though I do visit some painting locations a second or third time. I find it rewarding to know that my paintings are in many private collections all over the world, and I appreciate the direct contact with persons who wish to buy my paintings through this site. I feel that being a painter is very like being in a relationship - but with painting itself. The relationship has a life of its own. I like to follow where it leads me. Ideas for paintings lead on to further ideas and so on. Do please get in touch if you have any questions or comments.
