About The Artwork

I used a CNC router to create a 1/4” wide gouged concentric circle pattern starting from the centre of a piece of plywood. I buried the circle pattern with hydrocal leaving a discernible trace. The pattern was over painted with radial lines using brushwork. I pierced the centre then attached a motor to the back with the shaft rising past the surface of the painting through that hole. I attached a convex mirror to the shaft allowing it spin freely without touching the painting. I questioned whether this kinetic feature acted as a collaged component while arguably not attached to any part of the surface. Then where was the void? Was the void in the mirror or in the pierced hole in the pupil. The dialectic of presence or absence, or solid and void occurs.

Those ideas persuaded me to attend the University of Victoria where I earned my BFA (Hons) by 1992. The target was to develop a symbolic metalanguage to facilitate deconstructive events while perusing the ideas of painting in Western art history. I have expressed myself conceptually through gouged plywood painting, encaustic painting, kinetic painting, glitter painting, nano painting and pure substrateless painting in a style I think of as reductive but thoughtful.
