ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Some of Julia's work is focused on the stillness or saturation of a single colour but unlike many of her other pieces, this work is all about energy. After studying the work of Zao Wou Ki, she wanted to introduce more of a sense of dynamic movement and therefore, this work rests on layers of blue glaze in order to break free into the white and grey rapid strokes of the top layers. There is an urgency about these final layers, which captures freedom from self judgement.

My art is primarily organic abstraction, often portraying surreal and softened landscapes. A dream or nebulous quality marks both transitions and compositions. This is derived from a mode of life, which is rooted in inner stillness. I live in South West France, surrounded by tranquil forests. That quietness of being is what I strive for in my studio. I paint without distraction, so that I can fully connect with what I am creating. The more I can remove myself from the process, the better the work. I only paint in oils as they give such wonderful luminosity and I prefer large scale pieces for freedom of mind.
