About The Artwork

An artwork by representing the essence of art, gives us the opportunity to take a glimpse at the hidden structure of correlations and interconnectedness-regardless of the medium it materializes in. The first veil can fall. A distance is formed between the idea created by vision and reality. Nothing is simply as much as it seems to be, what more, it is not that (it is something else completely). I was searching for people rebelling against social and ethical norms, well-known and anonymous faces, creatures. Are they really rebellious or just deviant? These creatures built a monument for themselves during their lives already. "Creatures" in some kind of flushed, exalted state of mind with strong mimicry. The majority of the faces were made on aluminum plate. Earlier I had been experimenting with this very delicate carrier, which reminds us of the cold metallic corpse plates of morgues. The faces created on aluminum plate are cold and there is no background to them. They are mirrors but blurred, scratched mirrors in which our figures, our faces are reflected as well.

Agnes Verebics is an emerging artist from Hungary. She was born in Enying, graduated in 2006 at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest / painter faculty. She is one of the most outstanding talents of the Hungarian contemporary art scene, whose works – in spite of her young age – have been shown in several galleries, including Ludwig Museum, the Essl Museum and ENA Viewing Space, Budapest. Her works have also been selected into the Torn Curtain exhibition connected to Art Basel Miami, which has become one of the biggest contemporary art fair worldwide. Human layers, the hidden corners of the personality, experiments to find ourselves behind our passions – these are the themes explored in Agnes Verebics’ (1982, Enying/Hungary) work. The forms of the shocking, powerful works vary. However, instead of the cute and charming little images we meet puffed expressions and frightened looks.
