My big surprise recently was becoming part of a TV show..15 seconds of fame and all that. Seriously though, it was an amazing experience, and when an idea is sound and the ingredients gel, real magic occurs. And that was the message. 'Home Is Where The Art Is' spans 15 episodes broadcast back to back on BBC 1 3:45 each afternoon, from the 8th of April. I took part in the third episode (you can catch up with the whole series though on the BBC Iplayer) I won't say all that much, for me it was a very personal experience, as you will come to realise if you watch the show... I was commissioned by a wonderful Indian lady who lives and works in Birmingham to create an artwork that might celebrate her selfless donation of half her liver to save her mum's life, and that was her reason for being part of 'Home Is Where The Art Is' You can buy fine art prints of the painting I made. It is my celebration of Ravi's sacrifice and loyalty, who thinks of her mum as a Tigress who fiercely guards her family. My big decision this year is to make very clear my intentions and hopes for how my art grows and broadens to expand on some themes and ways of capturing the dynamics of nature while at the same time understanding art once established will always look for a familiar pattern.... So...bolder than before, yet strength has to be measured with harmony and a balance....and when one juggles with a new process, balance is often a tight rope walk into the unknown ...the unknown equilibrium of what could be...? I knew from the first simple monotone engraving I made that I had found my medium, the one I would not tire of, and the one which I can continue to develop without simply making 'signature' pieces. I cannot consider losing sight of what was always magical for me in every art work....yeah, but I did that last time...what if I try THIS! Artists have to take a gamble sometimes...a leap of faith, and they must want to do original work. When I explain to people I use angle grinders to engrave my work they look at me rather strangely...The fact is power tools have given me a great freedom to express in dynamic strokes the dynamic I see every day in nature. , |And once mastered, they can be a much more subtle tool than you might imagine. So.... Two subjects that strike me as my imperative right now....as I am close to the coast where I live...
