I recently came across a series of colorized photographs of soldiers and generals from the US Civil War. I've been intrigued with the look of colorized, black-and-white photographs since I was child. I am 36 years old and I grew up in a time where I witnessed technology really enhance and change the way people lived and worked. I went to high school when the internet was first beginning and I didn't get a cell phone until after I graduated. Colorizing photographs reminds me of old photos that I would look through as a child. When I came across this recent batch of photos of the Civil War it not only was nostalgic but the enhancement of colorizing photos has really come a long way. They look dreamy and surreal; as if you are traveling through time. I also chose to turn these photos into portraits because of the current climate within the United States. I chose to leave the identities and the sides these men were fighting for as a mystery, to allow the viewer to form their own opinion of the finished painting.
