Mynydd II Painting

A semi-abstract landscape painting inspired by the mountains and valleys of North Wales. 'Mynydd' (pronounced muh-nith) is the Welsh word for 'Mountain'. This work forms part of an ongoing interest in making paintings that evoke a feeling of a place rather than being entirely representational. As such they are imaginary places, reconstructed memories that use a graphic vocabulary fuelled by the language of landscape. The work in this series is created in the studio after walking on the coast or in the countryside from sketched references, mental notes and photography. Whilst this presents as a somewhat figurative landscape, with its abrupt cuts and joins and construction, it has a fragmentary sense of the passing of time. Stylistically, this walks a line between hard-edge constructionism and more painterly textures and levels of "unfinish" that bring a sense of movement to the work. The use of bold fields of colours chosen from a limited palette are painted over sculptural relief surfaces constructed by hand from layers of cardboard on wood. This combination gives it a characteristically graphical quality that is rooted in experiments of colour interaction.
