It was thanks to him that I understood that murder scenes should be shot like love scenes and love scenes like murder scenes." (Grace Kelly) This painting is part of my series "Being Marilyn Monroe. Icon Portraits.", a series of self-portraits reflecting and expressing my admiration for and my identification with inspiring modern day icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Frida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn, Maria Callas, Romy Schneider, Michael Jackson, Grace Kelly and Niki de Saint Phalle. To Grace Kelly I feel attracted because of her talent, “grace” and noblesse. Like Maria Callas she left art for love, marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco. She changed many roles with the role of a lifetime. Grace is the incarnation of every girls dream to become a princess. And a warning too, because castles can be gilded cages, and lovers a nightmare. The idea to make Me as Grace united to Fantomas has been inspired by my friend, artist Udo Linke. This artwork is more than just a celebrity self-portrait, like in the beginning of my Icon Self-Portrait Series. It refers to the world I am living in, to personal experiences. What's in my mind is blended with how I feel and what I see around me. NICE also refers to the July 14th 2016 terrorist attack in the city of Nice. The names of the victims are written in the background of the painting.
