About The Artwork
I don't like portraying people at all. And even when people are necessary on the canvas for the sake of the idea or the composition, I paint them small or usually from behind. For me the portrait is the mask. A deception. The back of the hero doesn't deceive. It has more of a character, and it can tell much more about the person than the face and eyes. That's why I painted my Napoleon from the back view - my Napoleon is the fallen titan, tired of life and battles, who has survived in Leipzig, Waterloo and exile to Elba and is waiting for the ship to St Helena. The conception of the entire painting grew from a single line. The line of the shoulders- he is struggling the world on this shoulders. (from Urbi et Orbi book devoted to the artist published in 2015 after his death)
