ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is an abstract cityscape with little windows showing a realistic sky and Cherry Blossom tree. It is a hint to nature always finding a way, even in a concrete jungle. This painting is part of my New Reality series. The series explores the idea of abstraction inspired by realism. In other words, I take inspiration from real objects in nature and present them in a more metaphorical interpretation. Many of these real objects that I interpret are memories from my trips such as mountains and buildings. During the process of creating, I often start with a textural background and focus more on color choices rather than the overall image. This leads to adding shapes and focal points that set up the overall composition for the painting. Most of the time I get completely lost in the process and paint what feels right to me. Once I feel very satisfied with the outcome is when I stop. Sometimes this feeling comes to me quickly and other times it happens over a longer period of time. They are little snapshots of my memories of how I see the world around me. The edges are painted black and there is a wire on the back for hanging.

Art is a means of exploration and experimentation for me. Art is my passion as well as art education and I am thankful that I am able to pursue both by working as a high school art teacher and an artist. I enjoy working with a wide variety of color, texture, and transparencies to create expressive landscapes. Nature has always been my number one inspiration and motive when creating. My color choices are vibrant and diverse, creating the abstraction and imagination in the paintings. As an art teacher, I am able to see my students ideas and stories in the classroom. Their ideas inspire me everyday and bring me so much happiness. It is so fun and motivating to see their creativity. For three years, I worked as an artist assistant for a well known St. Louis artist. I was able to learn so much from the studio and always left inspired by her artwork.
