About The Artwork

30 x 40 inches Acrylic on Canvas, ready to be framed I am inspired by animal stories, folklore, mythology, and fairy tales. While my work pulls directly from these sources, my goal is not to illustrate but rather give one the same uncanny feeling derived from reading or hearing those stories. My figures and landscapes are ambiguous; inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks. My recent explorations have gone deep. Deep into the forest, the ocean, the unconscious, miniature ecologies, the grotesque and the beautiful, unrequited love, and danger. I have applied paint thickly and cut deeply into it to create surfaces which tell stories within the larger narratives on the canvases. Other layers beneath the thick impasto are partially visible; they are lost stories which inform the present work. I hope each canvas will reveal something new each time it is viewed.

I am a storyteller by nature and choose to record my tales through painting. Although, more often than not, I find that ultimately it is the painting that dictates the story. I am not afraid of vibrant color or letting my process show. I begin with serendipitous splashes of paint or media and build from there, adding figures, patterns and/or recognizable shapes, while remaining open to change based on what the painting demands. I am drawn to fantasy and otherworldly subjects with sub-themes of environmental concern and the human condition. I often employ archetypes and familiar symbols in my work.
