Part of a current body of work exploring mark making techniques, creating the illusion of texture and a veneer over the reality. During the last couple of years and unprecedented changes in the way we live, with the resulting limitations placed on my creativity, I endeavoured to adjust and explored well taught techniques, in this new body of work. My response to the chaos, was to focus and obsess on the minute detail and shapes of the Banksia flowers, that had recently featured so heavily in my work. This was my therapy, capturing these tiny details in a repetitive pattern of brush strokes over the canvas, creating a veneer over the layers below, and a visual dance. My Native flower still life works are indeed the antithesis of these detailed brush strokes, yet they are connected through colour and shape. All combined with abstract landscapes in a nod to my beloved South Africa and Australia. One of the major influences in my work is the Protea flower that has a mythological association with past, present and future, it symbolizes diversity and courage, zooming in on only the detail seems an appropriate outcome at this time. A large work framed in a light tasmanian Oak frame with a snug fit, the Oak has a slight blush tone to it and a softness that doesn't show in photos. Please view the close up image showing the frame in more detail (not the mock up photos). This work is priced to include a full wooden crate for transporting.

Australia
Having lived in the UK, South Africa, and now in Australia, preserving elements of her life and experiences is paramount in her work. Compositionally diverse artist she often seeks to capture a symbolism in her work, drawing on her experiences living in these very different countries. Calling on the connection she has with South Africa and Australia, Karen Goddard’s abstracts and floral artworks are deeply influenced by the botanicals and environmental facets familiar to both. Her still life depictions encapsulate the innate shapes and exuberance of her organic subjects, while her mark making abstractions embody their unique and specific colourations. Previously living through times of national turmoil and transformation, her works persistently focus on the beauty of her natural surroundings, and deliver an emotive and meditative quality that arouses captivation and peace. Favouring an impressionistic creative approach, Karen alternates between oils and acrylics in order to produce diverse compositional elements, imagery and texturizations. She typically begins by depositing a ground colour onto the canvas, which habitually determines the ethos of the work. Layering the complimentary colours in stages, which are individually mixed through a meticulously process, each of the darker shades are typically set down first, while lighter colours are introduced later. A pattern of short and repetitive brushstrokes are utilised in the creation of her abstracts, which produces an overlay over the existing colour work, and instigates the qualities of movement and flow.
