MATTHIEU VAN RIEL ABSTRACTS (Saatchi Art) & MATTHIEU VAN RIEL (Saatchi Art).
This website shows my ABSTRACT paintings. My other website MATTHIEU VAN RIEL (Saatchi Art) shows my abstract-figurative paintings.

I use two different painting styles.
1. Abstract.
2. Paintings on the boundary of abstract and figurative. ‘Boundary’ paintings.

In my studio, I have a lot of photographs of mountains, glaciers, rocks, woods, plants, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, fields, seas and landscapes, taken during my travels in the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the Alps, France, Italy. These photographs are the starting point for my abstract and ‘boundary’ paintings.
The boundary paintings are the result of my formal approach of the landscape, to be aware of light, space and emptiness in landscape. In some way they are related to minimal art. In other boundary paintings I refer to Kaspar David Friedrich’s contemplative landscape paintings, to experience the grandeur of the landscape. (Kaspar D. Friedrich was the great landscape painter of German Romanticism in the 19th century).

The abstract paintings are about painting itself. But nature and landscape are always on my mind in the background.
