Noir No. 1 Painting

This painting was inspired partially by a still from a film noir–I liked the intensity and ambiguity of the feeling between the two characters–and partially by my ongoing love affair with lighting. In this piece, I was thinking particularly about my different shades of "black," which are all actually deep variations of other colors, and the beautiful plays of shadow and tone between them. The highlights that emerged from such an otherwise dark piece had a stillness and subtlety that I liked. The details of the faces and clothing are deliberately hazy and blurred in many spots, which to me expressed something of the quality of the scene–sitting in a dark room at night, you can sense other people more than you can really see them. The (original) piece is painted on canvas stretched over a wooden frame. The sides are painted to match the front, but the back is still white. There is no mounting hardware currently attached, but there is enough space between canvas and wall that it sits securely when the wooden frame is rested on two picture-hanging nails. It is also a thin enough piece that it could be fairly easily framed.
