BIO: Anne, a British citizen born and raised in South Africa, also lived in six European countries for 25 years and traveled the world extensively before settling in the United States. New Orleans was Anne's beloved adopted city for a few glorious years until Hurricane Katrina. Anne's studio is in Milford, Delaware, USA. She mostly paints large size acrylics impasto style with a palette knife - always full of vibrant color and movement, plus charcoal or soft watercolor sketches Anne is honored to be the 2013 recipient of the Delaware Division of the Arts Established Fellow for Folk Art-Visual Arts discipline. She was awarded an artist in residence for 3 weeks in Colorado in 2009. During her stay she worked with a well-known print maker in the San Luis valley. An award-winning self-taught artist, her acrylics and watercolors can be found in many private collections in Europe, Japan, South Africa, Canada, all over the United States. Among her corporate clients are HBO and Universal Studios, Hollywood, California; Ritz-Carlton at Lake Oconee, GA.; Haley-Donovan, Architects, Haddonfield, NJ 2012; Datacert Inc., Houston, Texas; TravelTalk Radio, San Diego, CA., and Entergy Power Company, New Orleans, Louisiana. ARTIST STATEMENT: I am a self taught artist, born and raised in Africa. My medium is acrylics impasto style, painting primarily with a palette knife. My style is impressionist, loose and free with bold color and is best described as primitive fine art. I often incorporate burlap or handmade paper in to my art for texture and the earthiness of the fabric. Burlap is the quintessential ethnic fabric. In Africa we frequently use burlap as a canvas. My inspiration is the strength and courage of women and how women help women. So often those with the least do the most for others. Women display dignity and courage in many harsh situations - not just in war zones but also in difficult living conditions. I base the paintings on women and scenes I have seen and experienced around the world during my travels. A strong suggestion in my work is of women helping women regardless of race or economic status. Not all my work is African inspired or social statements. I paint seascapes and landscapes of Delaware and beyond. I find mixing up my styles and subjects keeps me fresh. Sharing and interacting with other artists and feeding off their creative energy are a distinct boost to my artistic spirit.
