ABOUT THE ARTWORK

NORMALIZATION OF THE BREAST Normalization is the protection of the individual from any particular feelings thaT are associated in society with the object of normalization. In other words, normalization is the cessation of undesirable associations. For the first time in sociopolitical discussions, the term began to function in connection with the practice of "normalizing violence" - the process of persuading society that violence is an ordinary phenomenon with which it makes no sense to fight. The practice of normalizing negative phenomena is compensatory in nature for individuals, but for society as a whole it serves the erosion of morality and an increase in hierarchical inequality between individual social groups, separated by formal categories of hierarchy. In this project, the term "normalization" is also applied in the positive context of abandoning the restrictive norms prescribed by the behavior of a woman. The right to be topless in public places, on the street, etc. is recognized by feminists as an integral part of gender equality. To date, the right to walk through the streets of topless is in the women of Sweden. On the beaches you can be without the top of the swimsuit in Holland, in Brazil (where the naked woman's breast is an indispensable attribute of the Brazilian Carnival), in California and Miami, in France (except for the banks of the Seine) and in Bali. In Italy in 2004, the topless is allowed to sunbathe on the beaches only in the reclining position, and the right to sunbathe in general without clothes is possessed only by "beautiful" and slender girls "capable of glorifying the beauty of the female body." It is legally forbidden to sunbathe all the Muslim countries, as well as in the Maldives , in Sri Lanka and Thailand, despite the fact that these are recognized centers of sex tourism. Traditionally, the nude female breast is considered the norm for indigenous tribes of Africa and Australia. In Russia in 2015, topless in public places is legally prohibited for both sexes. In most cases, the ban on exposing the female breast concerns, mainly, the exposure of the female nipples, allowing the decollete. In recent years, the prohibition extends strictly to the demonstration of nipples. In 2008, in Florida, the demonstration of nipples in public, including male ones, is prohibited. In 2013, Republicans of North Carolina proposed a draft law providing for six months in prison for exposing nipples or any fragment of the areola of the female breast. In Louisiana in 2014, a law was passed, according to which for this it is possible to go to jail for three years. In 2014, the nipple demonstration was banned in the popular Instagram network. At the same time, the protest movement against the ban on showing female nipples on photos in Instagram # Free TheNipple is gaining momentum, which is joined by American show business stars, models and actresses. Female breasts are a symbol of fertility in all archaic cultures. It is included in the number of secondary sexual characteristics along with the hair covering in the pubic region and underarms, the specific smell of sweat glands, menstruation in women, the pollination, the appearance of an Adam's apple and the mutation of the voice in men, the specific features of the development of the musculoskeletal system in both sexes; bright plumage of males, odorous glands, horns and canines - in animals. That is, in principle, nothing initially especially trigger in the mammary glands is not present. Just a secondary sex, one of. We do not close the Adam's apple with a handkerchief and do not consider hairy armpits to be so indecent. In female nipples offensive to others no more than in the male beard, adolescent pimples or Adam's apple. Especially absurd mastofobia against the background of the obvious primary function of the mammary glands is the feeding of infants. Technically, the breast is not even intended for sexual intercourse, which was branded by traditional religions as something vicious. The human body is sexualized in our culture immensely and unlimitedly. The policy of imposing moral attitudes that limit sexuality and corporeality leads to the alienation of man from his body and his sexuality, which becomes the basis for their further commercialization. Simply put, "power" prohibits to sell. The ban stimulates demand and causes its subsequent satisfaction on a commercial basis or creates a basis for manipulating the social groups divided in the process of this alienation. This mechanism is the universal generic characteristic of any hierarchical system that destroys the horizontal connections between people, which stimulates the constant circulation of the masses to the "higher instances", to the "third party" and the growth of surplus value. Under the pretext of fighting for morality, the exposure of some parts of the body to women and men is taboo, and in Muslim culture - also the person of the woman. (It is characteristic that in different cultures the exposure of various parts of the body is forbidden. For example, Hindus consider indecent the demonstration of the female shoulders, but the exposure of the female abdomen of any forms is considered beautiful). Although this moral imperative refers to sexual abstinence and, in general, to the limitation of enjoyment by earthly goods in favor of the spiritual

MILA ARBUZOVA Mila Arbuzova was born in Saint-Petersburg, Russia in 1973. Having graduated from Saint-Petersburg's University of Humanities and Social Sciences, she worked as a journalist at the different art and cultural magazines. At the same time she began her own artist's experiments. Mila Arbuzova spent her childhood in the downtown of Saint Petersburg. Her family lived in a block of flats in Grazhdanskaya Street where, according to Dostoevsky's famous novel "Crime and Punishment", the old female moneylender killed by Rodion Raskolnikov used to live. In Soviet times guides often showed foreigners the place where the legendary murder occurred. Maybe this location of the native house made an influence on the future artist. The art work of Mila Arbuzova is essentially  "Saint-Petersburg's": lyrical, strict, sometimes - tragicomocal, philosophical, serious and absurdist in the same moment. It includes a wide range  of subjects: the sarcastic sketches in the spirit of "social art" as well as the magical  fantastic pictures together with free compositions combining parts of realistic images in a surrealistic manner. Contemporary Russian Art despite its visual diversity tends to simplify so that its painting mainstream is becoming more and more schematic and conditional due to both accelerated tempo of modern life along with its formalization and current art market conjuncture. In contrast to this tendency works of other Russian artists tend to re-establish classical painting culture as independent elitist art form which can be appreciated only by the narrow circle of fans and art hedonists of special kind. Mila Arbuzova's paintings combine the realistic painting's techniques (including attention to details, subtle color nuances, harmonious composition solutions) with actual social issues, absurd sense of humor and lyricism. All these features traditionally characterize art of St. Petersburg. In her paintings the principles of both figurative and abstract art are incarnated. Abstraction, however, does not play a merely decorative role: you can be sure that it is integrated into the plot. All Arbuzova's work deal with a few major themes: politics, beach, portrait, sport and dance. Also Mila Arbuzova is an author and inspirer of the international women's art project "BIOWOMAN".
