ASH, OIL AND CHARCOAL ON BURNED PANEL
In 2016 I started photographing and painting Southern California fires and the ash clouds they produced. The series of paintings is called 'Nostalgie,' the Czech translation of 'Nostalgia,' because of the emotions attached to seeing and experiencing these amazing and horrifying natural events. These were the first ash paintings I made. I make these by burning the painting panel with a torch and smearing it with ash. Then, using thinned white oil paint, the image is 'pulled out' of the charred, sooty background, layer after layer as it combines with the ash.
Signed on the back. Hangs on a cleat.
