About The Artwork

Not So Sure is from the Unknown Series - a series of paintings created during 2020’s Covid Pandemic. This painting, like the rest in the Unknown, is a series of odd yet colourful shapes. Art creation has been a sort of coping mechanism for me during times of stress and uncertainly. I am very grateful that I have it and am able to stabilize myself and my emotions during my art process. I titled the series Unknown because there are many things unknown for myself as well as many artists and creatives during this time. Not only is our near, and sometimes even immediate, future unknown for us as individuals, but we also have no idea what the future might be for arts and culture industry. Despite the difficult times it represents, I also see these works as hopeful, reminding us that with changes, even difficult ones, there come new beginnings.

I communicate and tell the world who I am through my art practice. Creating art and working on creative projects is my way making sense of life experiences and my environment. There is a lot of meaning infused into each of my art pieces. I do not exaggerate when I say there is much of myself in every artwork I create. Aside from containing beautiful colours and interesting textures, there is a story behind every one of my creations. And the stories I tell are very personal, usually it's a tale from my childhood and younger years that is lurking behind each rich layer of paint. I was born and raised in the Philippines, where my happiest moments were spent in the lush natural wonders that surround the tiny island nation. Being heavily influenced by Japanese animated cartoons, I started drawing my own and my career as an artist commenced. As an adult I continued drawing or a while and my comics were published in a couple small local publications after immigrating to Vancouver, Canada. But then I discovered acrylic paints. That's when my love affaire with paints began. Versatility was the feature I loved most about acrylics plus its ability to play well with other art materials. After dabbling with acrylics I discovered the wonderfully vibrant and fluid alcohol inks and the glass finish of resin. My mixed media paintings are a marriage of these three materials.
