Note Painting

Portraiture is the starting point of my practice. Often working with found imagery, each oil painting is an exploration of the material, its capabilities, and the physical act of painting; colour, form, mark making and texture. Layers of paint are applied to the canvas then studied, scraped back and re-applied in an inquisitive way; mistakes and their corrections are left visible to the viewer. The original image is broken down during this process, leaving simple forms and bold brush strokes which border on the abstract but allude to where something once was or where something should be. The intention is not to reproduce a life like rendering of the original image rather to push at the tradition of painting people by deconstructing and removing certain elements. The eyes are deliberately left unfinished and the backgrounds painted a solid hue, avoiding any obvious narrative or reference to the gaze.
