About The Artwork

OSTUNI, EXHIBITION "THE COLORS OF THE UNIVERSE" BY VALERIA FERRARI August 21st, 2017 OSTUNI - Nobody is alone. Everything is connected. The infinitely big and the infinitely small. Each of us has an inner world, which is completed in that of his neighbor, and all together they are reflected in the cosmos. There are artists who spend their lives in searching for that world in themselves, so that the others can see it and understand how similar we are. Valeria Ferrari is one of them. We met her a few months ago to review her exhibition "Save the Beauty" in Cisternino, but at the same time she was already preparing another one, "The Colours of the Universe", which was held at the Palazzo Tanzarella in Ostuni. If that described a "concrete" reality like the female one, the new exhibition is projected towards a more ethereal dimension. "These paintings represent not my inner world, but my way of seeing, through my eyes and my colours, the space that surrounds us. My inspiration comes from my grandfather, Luciano Guerriero, to whom I dedicated the exhibition, first president of the Italian Space Agency. From him I learned to look at the stars, yet he claimed that the greatest mystery is not the universe, but the human mind. And the mind, in Valeria's intentions, must be stimulated by the artwork. "This time I wanted to make a different exhibition, that was not only an exhibition of paintings but that somehow interacted with the viewer, through games of light on the ceiling and a background of electronic music and recordings of radio waves coming from the space. I see that people in this way receive much more, I've also seen the elderly and children being emotionally 'taken' by this journey, and now I'm even more convinced that it's the right way. By working on all people's senses and not just on sight, it is also easier to break down the barriers between them". You defined your painting as "not dual", what do you mean? "In my works I combine water painting and oil, two apparently incompatible materials, merging them into a concept of universe, just to eliminate the concept of duality. It is a discourse that I believe I will carry on forever. We always talk about choosing, either right or left, or black and white, but no one ever talks about going beyond this division, about having a broader understanding of reality. Even Yin and Yiang, which represent the opposites in Eastern philosophy, have something about each other. We have constructed the reality that surrounds us according to logic, but perhaps at a certain point we need to make a leap by relying on our most instinctual nature, on our emotional intelligence, a part of the brain that we do not know. It is not by chance that in my paintings I describe space, or something infinite and still largely unknown". The paintings have all names of galaxies, stars, constellations, but this is the only trace of explanation that Valeria wants to give to those who see the exhibition. "I don't want to give too much information to the public, I want people to get to the artworks by themselves, to understand the power they have to interpret reality and the artistic representations. I want questions to be asked, because they are the ones that lead to knowledge. We are always looking for answers outside of ourselves, but we should start looking for them inside. We must never limit ourselves to a single point of view, our cerebral cortex allows us to go beyond, to look for and find infinite connections. And if it continues to do so, perhaps one day mankind will be fully aware of the world around it. Vito Giustino

Valeria Ferrari was born on the 8th of December 1988 in Bari, Italy, where she still lives and works. She began her studies of art and music very young and attended the Conservatory N. Piccinni to study cello. At the same time, she attended courses in ceramics and drawing. Following high-school she enrolled in the faculty of psychology and then attended some post-graduate courses in "hypnosis", "symbolic modelling" and "interpretation of the drawings of children". Her interest continued to turn to art in all its forms.Together with the artist Anna Guerriero, she created the first collection of “Gioiellid'Arte”, small watercolour paintings made of silver and glass mosaic from the ancient furnaces of Murano. With these works she created her first exhibition in 2010 –“Arcus CaelestisVenetiae”- in the gallery “DivisioneArte” in Bari. During the exhibition she performed a reading that provided a synthesis between colours, sounds and video images. The performance aimed to induce the viewer to follow a unique and personal artistic path through installations, which became an integral part of the work itself. Her work continued with a new exhibition in 2013 in Venice in the “Basilica del Frari”, in the important "Sala del Capitolo" where, together with "Gioiellid'Arte", she exhibited the sequel to her previous works: a series of large panels made of glass mosaic. In 2015 she opened a solo exhibition entitled "Violence" at the club "MAD" in Bari that sees her in the main role with the electric cello in a live musical performance. In 2016 she participated in the event opening of the event "SAVE THE BEAUTY", completing a live ‘Action Painting’ . The event at the Palazzo Roberti in Mola di Bari was dedicated to the fight against violence towards women. Her event also followed a multisensory path where the public witnessed the realization of the work at the time of creation, acting in synergy with the musicians, poets and writers present. In the summer of 2016 she collaborated with the project "TRITONO" in a series of events that included the presentation of original and unpublished musical projects. The work shows, in the pictorial work of Valeria Ferrari, the highest expression of the concept of experimentation, creating aintermingling of meanings between music, art and environment. In November 2016 she exhibited her works in a solo exhibition for the inauguration of the Dexter Club, a place of cultural interest in Bari.
