This oil and gold leaf painting is symbolic of the anima and animus supporting the power and strength of two unique individuals in history: Schopenhauer and Elizabet Ney, strong inspirations for me in my own contemplations when painting this work. Ney's sculpture of philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer is depicted in the piece. Schopenhauer’s philosophical writings are characterized by strength and power of the will. Elizabet Ney has always been a powerful influence on my career as an artist. Like me, she was from Texas, was characterized by a persistent nature, and was the first woman to study sculpture in the Munich Germany Art Academy. She then went on to sculpt many works of King Ludwig II, The Brothers Grimm, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Texas statesmen, including Sam Houston. This work is embedded and embellished with mixed media. The abstract gold leaf is a metaphor for music. There are rusty nails from the prairie homes of western settlers, wooden crosses, jewelry given to me, peacock feathers, and gem stones. The lions are representative of my past. My hope for the viewer is to enjoy the many textures, mystery, and symbolic power in this story and perhaps consider how one might define one's own inner travels.

My works are reflections of my experience in dream-like, psychological fairy tales that capture in frozen time various stages of my life. Through symbolic metaphor, I struggle, confront, and search the mysterious journey of existence. My goal is to create art that, in uncertain times, portrays the beauty that comes from the inner strength, hope, and enduring spirit that is human.
