About The Artwork

The painting depicts a moment of destiny, where the fate of a man and a city hangs on a single word. Oedipus, the wandering prince, faces the Sphinx, the winged guardian of Thebes. She is a hybrid of human and beast, a symbol of the unknown and the mysterious. She challenges him with a riddle that has baffled many travelers before him: What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening? The answer is hidden in the cycles of life and death, in the stages of human existence. Oedipus stands confident and defiant. He is not afraid of the Sphinx, nor of the corpses that litter the ground. He is a hero, a seeker of truth, a solver of mysteries. He has come to Thebes to find his origin and his destiny. He does not know that the answer to the riddle will also reveal his tragic fate: that he is the son of the king he killed and the son of the queen he married. He does not know that the Sphinx is his mirror, his shadow, his other self. The painting creates a contrast between the two figures: Oedipus is human and rational, the Sphinx is mythical and enigmatic. Oedipus is in motion, the Sphinx is still. Oedipus represents the light, the Sphinx represents the darkness. They are opposites, yet they are connected by a common thread: the riddle of existence. The painting also evokes a sense of mystery and wonder, as it transports the viewer to a fantastic world of ancient legends and myths. The landscape behind them is vast and majestic, suggesting a cosmic dimension to the scene. The mountains and the sky create a sense of depth and perspective, while the rocks and the clouds create a sense of texture and movement. The painting invites the viewer to contemplate the meaning of the riddle, the nature of the Sphinx, and the fate of Oedipus.
