Olympia Painting

While studying art history, the painting Olympia has come up many times as we spent more than 6 lectures on comparing the prior and the latter versions by Manet. As he mocked classicism at the Salon in Paris by referencing the classicized female nude as a prostitute, the concept of shock was created in art during that night. As I took more classes, and got into dadaism and wrote essays on fragmented bodies, it lit a spark in me as I decided to combine the classical triptych mannerism with fragmentation. Thus, began a journey that made me swim in Picasso's, Dali's, Manet's art forms. The process was indescribable. As a woman from Istanbul, I decided to add the specific Iznik tiles from the mosques that I have studied into the receding background thus creating a work that is inspired by many art movements. This work for me represents not only mocking, but also a combination and a proof that art history can be utilized as a means to create unprecedented artworks...
