Olympics of Art World Painting by Peter Vahlefeld

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, and pigmented Ultrachrome inkjet prints (collage) on canvas. The piece comes ready to hang.

A magazine page of a Picasso advertisement and the packaging of a Guggenheim chocolate bar were used as readymades on which the act of painting took place. The over-painted printed matter has been digitalized and reworked on the computer. Parts of it have been printed out as pigmented Ultrachrome inkjet prints and mounted on canvas (collage) with a transparent medium UV protection. Unlike on the computer, where the functional logic is based on described rules, the material on canvas becomes the topic as a sequence of actions. The result is a multilayered composition in which figure and ground seem to continually shift between the analog painting, and its digital counterpart.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Hong Kong and Hamburg (Germany). He studied fine arts at Parsons School of Design, NYC and currently lives between Berlin and Munich. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions and art fairs, including Art Fair Cologne, Art Karlsruhe (both Germany), Art Bodensee (Austria) and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Chloe Savigny (Paris), Fiona Alison (London), and 46 Parachute Purple (New York). Having two studios, one in Berlin and one in Munich, he was filmed there by the ZDF television channel for a Robert Mapplethorpe feature. His work can be found in corporate collections throughout Germany as well as in private collections worldwide.
