This nude is a nod to Rodin's sculpture La Danaide. But in modern terms it is an acknowledgment of the despair for many people, women in particular, who face seemingly unsurmountable challenges in order to accomplish their goals in life. The challenges maybe due to the many isms that cause "separation" - for example, racism, sexism, ageism. Or it may be due to physical or mental difficulties created by an unfriendly and dangerous environment. The artist had these many things on his mind as he created this work.
