A minimal composition of warm yellow and orange comprised of thousands of lines, flecks and dots. The edges are slightly darker creating a vignette to offset the vibrating field of energy. The canvas is textured and its sides are painted a solid dark warm black. Yellow Energy can be displayed both vertically and horizontally.

Technique:
My painting process begins by.texturing a stretched canvas with gesso and silica sand. The texture gives the painting a natural, almost sculptural tactility..Once the surface dries, I apply paint using a small fan brush and stick. For several hours, I tap the paint-loaded brush to build a field of thousands of flecks, dots and lines.

From a distance the painting appears unified and monochromatic. At closer range the surface is actually a vibrating field of infinite colours and lines. I avoid repetitive mechanical applications. Each fleck and line has a unique individuality.

Although the painting is predominately one colour, it is far from monochromatic. Monochromes, from my experience, cannot adequately sustain our attention or interest. To ensure that the image is compelling, I use thousands of intricate marks that peak and sustain the attention. While the viewer’s attempts to decipher these infinitely varied marks, mental energy is produced. The longer one examines the complex, enigmatic weave, the more the viewer feels energized. At least, this is what I am aiming for - to give the viewer a positive, holistic experience.

“What I dream of is an art of balance, purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, a soothing calming influence on the mind rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” - - Henri Matisse. Inspired by Matisse’s artistic quest to uplift and energise the viewer, I strive to create light and colour filled paintings that illuminate, soothe and vitalise the human spirit. Perhaps my appreciation for abstraction comes from living in Canada surrounded by mountains, lakes, sky and forests. Nature continually presents me with soothing colours, exciting designs, delightful patterns, intriguing patinas and infinite space. Nature presents light, dark, shadows and movement which evoke emotions of mystery, wonder and love. My goal as a painter is to use nature’s abstract elements like colour and space to capture a particular feeling, a feeling of unity, passion or peacefulness. I strive to create painterly abstractions that mysteriously resonate with my deeper self and hopefully with the soul of the viewer. I believe art is a way to communicate one soul to another.
