About The Artwork

All my life I have been captivated by the ebb and flow of the ocean upon the shore. There is a repetition of movement, yet a uniqueness found in each wave's mark left on the shifting, glistening sands. I was inspired by the flow of the ocean when I created this work. The light washes of color left their glimmering sediment upon the paper, their marks-a final stillness-yet active with a potential. I have named this series Origin because there is something elemental, something so fundamental in the marks left by my process. I see them as the origin of something organic, ethereal, and full of promise. They offer me a familiarity with something deep within me that I cannot quite name. My paintings are organic abstractions that transform with shifting luminosity. As light filters across their surfaces, a sense of depth is created. It is almost as if they are alive. I hope my viewers can get a sense of this from the photographs I have shared. There is an almost visceral sensation that occurs when one witnesses this in person. I chose to work with color washes in this way because I want to be released from thinking and planning when I create. I give myself over to the process. I do not use a brush, but dance with the paper as the pigment and metallic sediments flow and settle. I limit myself with color choice, the metallic type, and then I let go. When I stop, the marks left are traces of my movement and stillness. I am filled with such a warmth of emotion with each creation. —————————————————— I painted Origin #8 on acid-free, heavy-weight paper and sealed it with an archival protectant.

I am driven to create work by distilling nature into abstract form that beckons me into the sublime, that place where emotion holds dominance over vocabulary. As a contemporary artist, I am inspired by the balance between precision and freedom. I create meditative spaces that invite curiosity. My work is influenced by my extensive travels, love of nature, and living along the coast of Rhode Island. My abstract and representational paintings, installations, sculptures, and large-scale photographic works are characterized by organic forms and the use of nontraditional materials. My most recent paintings, "Stasis & Metamorphosis Collections," are poetic. Their graceful sculptural and curvilinear forms in sophisticated color palettes seem to float in the atmosphere.
