About The Artwork

This glitch portrait of a woman in profile is an exploration of how humans conflict with technology; can we coexist and embrace technology without letting it take over who we are as individuals? A glitch is a short-term, accidental error in a system. Glitches are common in the world of technology and are usually brief interruptions on screens/monitors that quickly resolve themselves. This painting explores the aesthetic effect when those glitches don’t self-correct. This textured artwork was painted in acrylic with warm tones in the areas of reflected light, contrasting with cooler and darker green/blue tones in the areas of shadow. The closed eyes show a woman at peace, which contrasts with the sharp horizontal glitch lines which juxtapose the color. These intentional errors or controlled imperfections help create a visually arresting piece.

BIO Jack Mason is a contemporary artist based in Germany whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, in Spain, the United States, Italy, Czech Republic and England. Born in the U.K. in 1982, Jack moved to Germany in 2012 with his girlfriend (now wife). At this time he was working as an earthquake researcher in academia. He has been creative all his life and always had a passion for art, so several years ago he finally decided to peruse this passion and became a professional artist. He often paints animals but is drawn to human portraits the most. His fascination for both people and nature was reinforced through years of travel in his previous profession, and his inspiration comes from a love of both Pop Art and Street Art. In his work he applies thick acrylic paint to large canvases using palette knives, creating both texture and depth. Combining this technique with bright and vibrant colors gives his artworks a dynamic energy which draws the attention of the viewer. STATEMENT I am fascinated by the way humans express themselves and I see my paintings as an expression of the human condition. Be it through a facial expression or the juxtaposition of color within a portrait, I try to communicate the emotions and experiences which make us all unique. My process involves the assemblage of abstract shapes of color using palette knives - layer upon layer, stroke after stroke - until eventually the desired form emerges. The faces I paint have detectable features but continually push towards abstraction, and the thick texture of my works make the viewer want to reach out and feel each piece.
